Our youth squad made the long trip to Killorglin this afternoon to play their first game of the season in the preliminary round of this years FAI Youth Cup. On arrival, the sun was shining but this quickly changed to rain and a strong wind blowing straight down the pitch. The home team decided to play with the elements at their back for the first half and went in at half time a goal to the good, 1:0 after we failed to clear our lines from a corner kick. Despite the score line and playing against the elements, our boys had played well in the opening half and knew that they were well capable of turning the score line around. We started the second half brightly and created numerous chances but failed to beat an in-form Killorglin keeper. However, when you’ve a player like Daragh Baker on your side and a player of his ability, you have always a chance of something special. Our captain dribbled centrally, beating 2 or 3 defenders before coolly finishing, giving us a much deserved equaliser.
Travelling down we knew we were without some regular starters due to injury but the boys weren’t settling for anything less that a win. Time was almost up when a ball broke to Rory about 12 yards and he sent a side foot to the roof of the net 1:2. We saw the final few minutes out comfortably and now move on to round 1 proper where we make the further away trip to Kenmare in 3 or 4 weeks time..
