The Tulla 2010 boys were involved in another National Trophy nail-biter today, this time away against Shelbourne from the Limerick District Soccer League (L.D.S.L) Premier Division.
Tulla started brightly, hitting the crossbar in the first 10 minutes. The game then settled into a rhythm, with Tulla pressing for the opening goal while Shelbourne looked dangerous on the counter-attack. Just before halftime, a Shelbourne break led to a corner, which they converted, ending the half 1-0 up.
Tulla appeared nervous after the break, and it took a crucial double save by goalkeeper Bobby to keep the team in the game. With 15 minutes remaining, Gbubemi came on as a forward for Tulla. A few minutes later, his shot was blocked by the Shelbourne keeper, but Bearach followed up and slotted the ball into the net. At 1-1 in the 70th minute, the game went into extra time.
Tulla dominated extra time, with Gbubemi scoring to put Tulla 2-1 up in the first period. Tulla thought they had extended their lead when they put the ball in the net again, but the goal was disallowed for a push.
With the score still 2-1 going into the final minute, a clumsy challenge in the box gave Shelbourne a late penalty, which they converted to equalise and force the match into a penalty shootout. All five Tulla United penalty takers scored, while Shelbourne hit the crossbar. Tulla progressed to the next round.
It was an exciting game for the spectators, with both teams giving it their all in a highly competitive but sportsmanlike manner.
Best of luck to Shelbourne for the remainder of their season, and well done Tulla on advancing to the next round.
